Panathinaikos looks to lure Alex to Athens
By: Peter Katsiris | December 3rd, 2008
With defensive woes the big worry for Panathinaikos these days, the January transfer window is expected to be the time for the ‘Tryfilli’ to fill those holes in defense. With less than a month until the winter transfer window, rumors have been to circulate in many parts of the world with various proposals. But in Greece the talk at the moment is all Chelsea’s Alex, who is Panathinaikos’ next transfer target.
Since moving from PSV Eindhoven to Stamford Bridge, the Brazilian has not enjoyed the same success as he did in the Netherlands. With plenty pressure on Panathinaikos to perform not just in Greece, but in Europe as well, the transfer rumors have developed with Panathinaikos portrayed as a high-roller for Alex’s services.
Reports have gone far enough to include a current member of the Athenian giants, Gilberto Silva, as a key player in the proposal. The former captain of the Brazilian national team, made a similar move from London to Athens, when Silva left Arsenal this past summer. With a patriot on Panathinaikos’ side, it seems Panathinaikos has a little help in securing this transfer.
No move can be made official until the start of the winter shopping spree, which is set to begin during the early hours of New Year’s Day; however, according to reports in Greece, both sides have met recently to discuss a potential transfer. With Chelsea likely to hold their ground firmly over the future of the defender, finances may be the deciding factor in this scenario.
