AEK caught up in Cufré chase

By: Peter Katsiris | January 23rd, 2009

While AEK’s presidential search has overshadowed much of the transfer gossip surrounding the OAKA Spyro Louis Stadium, AEK’s pursuit of troubled Argentine Leandro Cufré has made headlines in the Greek capital.

The AS Monaco player appears to have no future in France, after French officials joined the surge to strip Cufré of his Italian passport, claiming his documentation was forged. Not included in the global investigation featuring several Argentine players with forged Italian passports, Monaco’s abundance in non-EU players forced the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) from suspending the player.

Originally expected to leave the principality at the end of the season, it now seems Cufré will be leaving sooner rather than later. According to French newspaper L’Equipe, Cufré has been linked with a move across the Mediterranean to Greece. The French paper reports Athenian giants AEK Athens are interested in securing the Argentine’s services.

An able central defender, AEK’s potential acquisition of Cufré would add depth to a defensive line featuring Greece international Sotiris Kyrgiakos and capped Sweden fullback Daniel Majstorovic.
