One year ban for Panthrakikos’ Roca

The Greek Super League’s disciplinary board has sentenced Panthrakikos goalkeeper Jose Roca to a one-year ban, after the Spaniard reportedly failed a drug test in January.
It was revealed earlier this week that Roca had in fact failed a drug test submitted after Panthrakikos 1-0 win over Iraklis on January 18th.
The Super League announced there were traces of budesonide in Roca’s sample, a treatment prescribed for asthma. Usually tagged with a two-year ban, Roca was suspended for one-year.
While most doping cases are usually laced with the intention of cheating, this case has been marked by forgetfulness as Roca admitted he forgot to alert the Super League of his use of budesonide. He added he used it legally for asthma, but his appeal after the verdict on Thursday was too little, too late.
It’s a huge blow for Panthrakikos who have yet to secure a spot in the Super League next season. Without Roca tendering the goal posts, the backstopping duties will fall to original starter Spyros Vrontaras or Croatian ‘keeper Zlatko Runje.
