Panathinaikos appear to have made their second acquisition of the winter transfer window official on Wednesday, as the Athenian giants are close to signing defender Jakub Wawrzyniak from Polish outfit Legia Warsaw.
The Poland international arrived in Athens late Wednesday night, and is expected to undergo a physical on Thursday.
Greeted by a mob of reporters at the Eleftheros Venizelos Airport in Athens, Wawrzyniak had kind words for his new employers. ” For me it is a big step in my career. Panathinaikos plays in the [UEFA] Champions League each year. It is a very big club, and for me it is very important for me to be here. I spoke with [Krzysztof] Warzycha, who for all Poles is a great player, and played a very important part for Panathinaikos.”
Joining Brazilian David as Panathinaikos’ only two winter imports thus far, Wawrzyniak’s arrival in Athens appears to be more than a traditional cosmetic transfer. With the return of Champions League football on the horizon, Henk Ten Cate is keen to reinforce his scrapped squad ahead of his side’s Round of 16 meeting with Villarreal in March.
