OFI makes Matzourakis manager

By: Peter Katsiris | November 20th, 2008

Ioannis Matzourakis has been officially unveiled as OFI Crete’s new manager. The Cretan club revealed the acquistion of the 59-year-old on its website on Thursday.

In a simple statement prior to Matzourakis’ arrival at the Nikos Kazantzakis Airport in Crete, OFI swiftly announced its most recent capture. “The administration of OFI FC announces its cooperation with manager Mr. Ioannis Matzourakis.”

Currently at the foot of the Greek Super League standings, the Cretan club has struggled all season long. After releasing Frantisek Straka, Pavlos Adamos was named caretaker manager just hours later. Under the Greek’s reign – that lasted just two weeks – OFI managed to capture its first win of the season. Days later, the Cretan club mustered its way through to the net round of the Greek Cup.

The colourful Greek boss has had plenty of success in the Greek top flight with clubs like Olympiacos, and Skoda Xanthi. His finest hour came with Olympiacos, when he steered ‘O Thrylos’ to a Greek Championship as well as deep run in the UEFA Champions League. A brief stint in Cyprus with APOEL FC was also successful, as Matzourakis guided the Nicosia-based side to a Cypriot Championship.

Despite prior success, the task at hand for a very experienced manager could seem very daunting. With a pressured environment keen to monitor his every move, Matzourakis faces a long uphill battle till season’s end. The trek for the Greek boss starts this weekend at the Pankritio Stadium in Heraklion, as Athenian giants AEK makes its way to the largest city in Crete.

I remember Matzourakis. He used to be a player at CFR Cluj and at Rapid in Romania in the late 60s, early 70s. Good player, but had to retire early. How is he as a coach?
