Cup triumph for Asteras in Thessaloniki
By: Peter Katsiris | October 31st, 2008
Two sides known more for their sturdy defense, than scoring prowess met in Thessaloniki on Thursday and it was Asteras Tripolis who edged out Beta Ethniki side Apollon Kalamarias with a 1-0 win at the Kalamarias Stadium. A late goal by Danijel Cesarec allowed the Super League side to squeak past a Kalamaria side that did little to help their cause.
With defensive tactics occupying the agenda of both clubs, chances to break the dead lock were limited. Asteras Tripolis looked more likely to tally, as the Peloponnesian side dictated the tempo of the match in the early moments; however, nothing seemed convincing until the late stages of the match. Zaouad Zairi was allowed too much room on the right wing, and with a pinpoint cross he was able to find Cesarec. With a powerful header, the Croat thrashed the ball into Matias Degra’s to give Asteras a late advantage. Carlos Carvalhal’s side held on to collect the win, and book a spot in the next round of the Greek Cup.
Asteras now joins the likes of PAOK, Panthrakikos, Olympiacos, Larissa, and Panionios who booked their spot in the fifth round earlier in the week. The remaining ten fixtures are scheduled for November kickoffs.
