Kintis throws in the towel as AEK President
By: Peter Katsiris | January 6th, 2009
AEK has started the new year with a rather similar scenario within its organization, as Giorgos Kintis has become the second president of AEK Athens FC to step down in the span of two months. In the wake of AEK’s 0-0 derby stalemate with archrivals Panathinaikos on Sunday, Kintis stepped down from his role which was supposed to be overseer of operations in an attempt to salvage AEK’s season.
Coincidentally, Kintis’ resignation comes just a day or so after the previous AEK president was left ruing his mistakes in an interview with Greek radio station Novasports FM. Demis Nikolaidis, a player-turned-president, admitted to several ‘mistakes’ he and his former colleagues made during the offseason.
While AEK has been in a downward spiral since it near title winning run last season, the loss of Nikos Liberopoulos, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, and Traianos Dellas, and the lack of replacements have been the deciding factor for AEK’s dismal run in the Super League thus far.
Combined with PAOK’s revived uprising this season, as well as Olympiacos continued dominance, a team tipped to challenge for the title at the start of the season has fallen into a 14 point hole behind league leaders Olympiacos.
